I wake up to the sound of my phone ringing. So, I don’t disturb Stefan who’s still sleeping peacefully, I slowly slip out from under him and slide the pillow I was laying on under his head. Walking over to where I left my jeans when I magicked them off last night, I fish out my cell phone and head into the living room to answer the call.

“Hello?”

“Tristan…” The strained, pain-filled voice is barely recognizable but I know who is calling.

“Councilman Morrow, are you alright?”

“No… but I… will be.” The hesitation tells me it’s hard for him to speak and I can’t help but wonder what happened to him.

“What’s going on?”

“Axis… found out… I hired you.”

The implication of what he means has my blood running cold. “What did he do?”

With a cough, Councilman Morrow wheezes out the words, “Sent a guy… to torture… me. I told… him what… I knew… which… is nothing. I… should be… dead but… the guy… left me… to suffer.”

“So, Axis knows I’m looking for Alexander and also evidence of his misdeeds. He’ll be coming for me next.”

“Yes… I’m sorry.” Councilman Morrow’s sounds weaker and I know he’ll die if he doesn’t get help soon.

“Don’t be. You did what you had to do. I’m going to get you some help and then I’ll take care of Axis.” Using my magic across the distance, I open a portal underneath Councilman Morrow while simultaneously creating the illusion of him being dumped out of a speeding SUV in front of the ER the portal drops him at. I set the portal to drop him in a hospital in Maine so if anyone decides to watch the local hospitals for him, they won’t find him.

Once that’s done, I magically dress myself and drop the phone on the floor -and Stefan’s too as a precaution- stomping both to pieces before magicking them into the trash can. I’m not sure how much time has passed since the man left Councilman Morrow, so Stefan and I need to move. If Axis has tracked my phone, then he’ll know exactly where I am and will be coming here. While there’s a slight chance he’ll assume I stopped in my hometown before starting the job and won’t come after me until he’s tracked my movements to Texas it’s not a guarantee. I won’t risk Stefan.

Returning to the bedroom, I see Stefan is still asleep. After magically packing him a bag, I use it to dress him. Stefan deserves to sleep in peace a little longer without the reality of our situation crashing down on him and takes the happy spark from his eyes. One I put there last night when we claimed each other. Taking care not to wake him, I lift him into my arms and carry him from the apartment. Before I step over the threshold of the front door, I glamour us both.

A hit of magic makes the door swing shut on its own and seals the apartment with a barrier so no one but us can enter.
